Zero-waste design is the trading name for Roy Mohan Shearer, a freelance designer/engineer/maker/musician based in Glasgow, UK.

I believe in design for sustainability, efficiency, and appropriateness. If you agree on any of those points, we're probably going to get on. Basically, I aspire towards a world that wastes no energy, materials, ideas, skills or goodwill, hence Zero-waste Design.

Zero-waste design is interested in solving design problems by making the absolute most of available resources in a creative, experimental and pragmatic way.

Biography: Roy Mohan Shearer

I am a designer, maker and musician. Working from the Southside Studios in Glasgow, I like to explore reclaimed materials, tinker with technology and examine the ways in which humans repurpose objects. I am particularly interested in open sourcing as a means of collaborative and appropriate design, as well as design for sustainability.

I gained a degree in Product Design Engineering, having studied at the Glasgow School of Art, University of Glasgow and the Institutt for Produktdesign, NTNU, Norway. I have since undertaken a variety of experimental and commercial projects, having previously designed for individuals, schools, charities, small businesses and a submarine manufacturer. I have also written extensively online on the topics of sustainable design and distributed manufacturing, and have exhibited work in Glasgow and London.

My influences are wide ranging- I most often find inspiration in the worlds of industrial mechanics, the home-made, and music. When I am not designing something I am likely to be found performing with Glasgow bands Inspector Tapehead and dBass.
